The term "doner kebab" means "grilled meat that spins" Both shawarma and gyros are adapted from the Turkish language and refer to "spinning". Shawarma is a deformation of the Turkish word "çevirme" which means to turn a meat over the coals, that is, horizontally, unlike döner which turns vertically.
